Hotel numbers on the rise in north east

HOTEL numbers in the heart of NewcastleGateshead have soared almost 70 per cent in the past five years and rooms exceed 5,000 for the first time, according to a new survey.
Since 2002 hotel bed space across NewcastleGateshead has grown by 42.6 per cent with the addition of 12 new hotels and serviced apartments.
An increase of almost 67 per cent has been seen specifically in the heart of the city centre,
according to the survey commissioned by Tourism Tyne and Wear.
It is believed that this demand for hotel rooms is due to mid-week business visitors and city break visitors. The rapid growth of Newcastle International airport has also been a factor.
